PlayStation Confirms Major Bungie Layoffs, Most of Destiny Team Affected

Written by PSX Network Staff

Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed a major round of layoffs at Bungie, with most of the Destiny development team and some members of the Marathon team impacted.

The news comes in an internal message from Hermen Hulst, CEO of the Studio Business Group at Sony Interactive Entertainment, who said the decision followed months of discussions with Bungie leadership about the studio’s long-term direction, development priorities, and resource needs.

According to Hulst, Sony explored multiple alternatives before deciding that workforce reductions were necessary to better align Bungie’s resources with its current priorities and long-term goals.

Despite the layoffs, Hulst reaffirmed Sony’s commitment to Marathon, calling it an important part of PlayStation’s portfolio. He said the company will continue supporting the team as development continues and as Bungie works on future projects.

Hulst also reflected on Destiny’s legacy following the release of its final live-service content update, praising the franchise’s impact on the gaming industry and thanking everyone who helped build it over the past decade.

Sony says its immediate priority is supporting affected employees through the transition by providing assistance and, where possible, identifying opportunities elsewhere within Sony Interactive Entertainment’s global network of studios.

The layoffs mark another significant restructuring for Bungie since joining PlayStation Studios and come as Sony continues to evaluate its first-party development strategy.
